The Old Goods Shed

You are now looking at the Old Goods Shed, part of the Bundanoon Railway Station complex which is of NSW state heritage significance. It was constructed c1885 and was originally used for the storage of goods being transported by rail. The Goods Shed is now the headquarters of the Bundanoon History Group and hosts regular historical displays.
Where’s the platform?
Unlike many railway buildings used for loading goods onto railway wagons, the Old Goods Shed has no platform on the railway side where the railway wagons once stood to be loaded or unloaded. This meant that each wagon had to be manoeuvred into position alongside, aligning its doors precisely with the Shed doors for loading or unloading. Goods were directly handled through the Shed’s large sliding timber doors facing the railway line and the road. Despite these rather clumsy arrangements, the design seems to have provided a basis for what would later become a standard design within NSW.
The Goods Shed which measures 30ft x 15ft, is constructed with a hardwood frame supporting corrugated iron walls with a gabled roof and timber doors. The corrugated sheets of iron came from the Gospel Oak Iron Works, in Tipton, Staffordshire, England. Gospel Oak commenced export of corrugated iron to Australia around 1850 and it continued for many years. The Gospel Oak brand of an anchor symbol between the letters G and O is stamped on the iron sheets.
In 2018, the Goods Shed was repainted in heritage colours as part of the Bundanoon Railway Station refurbishments, to celebrate 150 years since the railway first arrived at Bundanoon on 6 August 1868.
A change of use
In 1993, the Bundanoon History Group took out a lease on the Shed from the Australian Rail Track Corporation to ensure its continued preservation. The Shed was converted by the History Group to establish a small display of historical items and to store and conserve their historical collection of photographs and documents relating to Bundanoon.
Local tradesmen gave their services to restoring the Shed and building an insulated room inside for the History Group records. Mayor David Wood officially opened the refurbished Goods Shed as the History Group headquarters in December 1994.
Come and see the historical displays of Bundanoon
The inside of the Goods Shed hosts regularly updated displays of information and photographs relating to Bundanoon’s history.
There are also facilities for viewing archived documents and the photographic collection, which contains over 2,000 images. Most of our records are available for inspection and research.
The Shed is open to the public on the 1st and 3rd Sundays of the month to coincide with the Bundanoon Markets. (Or by special request.)
The Bundanoon History Group
The Bundanoon History Group was formed by a group of local residents in the early 1980s and has met monthly since 1984. We are an enthusiastic group of volunteers interested in the history of Bundanoon
We meet in the Memorial Hall at 10am on the first Monday of the month (except January). Guest speakers on local history are a feature of all meetings.
New members and visitors are very welcome at all meetings and at the Old Goods Shed on opening days.
We assist with public enquires about Bundanoon history and sell copies of some of the photos in our collection. We also publish and sell books on local history and hold regular guided tours to places of historical interest.
